Hypocrisy, assumptions, and innuendos

I’m really not an angry person by nature.  I have always considered myself easy going and tolerant.  Maybe its menopause, but more and more things are catching my attention, causing my blood pressure to rise, and then things start tumbling out of my mouth.  The older I get, the more opinionated I become and the more vocal I become about my opinions.  In some ways I’ve always had these opinions or thoughts.  It just seems that here lately I can’t seem to get a handle on them, shove them back into my own brain, and keep quiet.

For instance, I don’t liked the words never and always.  Mainly when used in sentences like “I would never…..” or “I always…….”  For years when I hear someone making these types of statements I start paying more attention to what they do and how they act.  Usually these people are unwittingly setting themselves up to be something that they are not.  Just pay attention when you hear this in a conversation.  Maybe its just me, but if you watch someone who frequently uses never or always you will find that they pretty much do the complete opposite of what they say.

I hate innuendos.  Innuendos is basically gossiping without coming right out and spreading the lie.  “You know what they say.”  Innuendos are also used as misdirection.  If you’ve got something to say, just say it.  Don’t beat around the bush, don’t drop hints, don’t make insinuations, don’t try to imply something.  Maybe people think they are being discreet by not just coming out and saying what they mean, but it will be repeated as gossip always is.  Then it goes from an innuendo to a rumor and then before you know it, its being presented as fact.

Assumptions.  I think we all know the old saying “Assume – makes and Ass of U & Me.”  Assumptions don’t irritate me too much.  In fact they can be pretty funny or just a little annoying.  Its the arrogance that is sometimes attached to an assumption that gets to me.  Assumptions, presumptions.  They can be funny or annoying, depending on who you are and where its coming from.

But the single biggest blood pressure raising event is hypocrisy.  Hypocrites.  Someone who says one thing and does another.  Someone who speaks out of both sides of their mouths.  Someone who points at another’s transgressions while hiding their own.  Someone who speaks out against something and then sneaks around and does those very things.  Whether it be political, religious, or personal.  Most people involved in gross hypocrisy are usually arrogant and narcissist.  They believe that they are smarter than the general public and this fact is usually what gets them into trouble.

I’m not perfect, far far from it.  I make assumptions about people.  I make mistakes.  I speak out of turn.  I say things I regret.  Occasionally I’ll say one thing and do another.  But I do make a real effort each day to be a generous, sensitive, compassionate human being.  I know everyone doesn’t see every situation the same.  The only thing I wish is that we could treat each other a little more kindly,a little more compassionately, and maybe cut each other a little slack.

  1. You would be amazed at some of the people who have gotten pissed off and emailed me and even unfriended me because they thought I was sending them some kind of message. Sometimes even a Facebook status sets them off.
